I have a problem with some of my atari games, when run in an XL the programs will not function properly because of the BASIC in rom. Does anyone know how to avoid this? Thanks in advance! Mark Holden (not Matt Goldman who is merely an innocent bystander)

From what I understand about the XL series, all you have to do is hold down the <OPTION> key and the system skips the BASIC ROM. If that is not the problem, you may look into the Translator Disk available from Atari. Clancy Malloy (...ihuxj!freak))

Just in case there is some confusion about what Mr. Malloy said, he meant that you should hold down the <OPTION> key when POWERING UP your XL computer, so that the BASIC ROM will be flipped out. Once I had done this on my computer, almost all (>95%) of my software worked flawlessly. As well, since the <RESET> button on the XL computers attempts to do a 'cold start' (please someone correct me if I am wrong), if the program you are executing does not trap <RESET>, you can usually hold down the <OPTION> key, and hit <RESET> to boot the disk and load a different program (assuming you have more than one program on the same disk, or have swapped disks by then!). The above procedure will save wear and tear on your power switch, but does not always work, especially in the newer programs which attempt to be smart and trap <RESET>.

Holding down <OPTION> while powering up works with a std 16K XL, but after upgrading mine to 64K I need to hold down both the <OPTION> and <START> keys.
