[net.micro.atari] Wanted: Atari Disk repair

lenh@azure.UUCP (Len Hayward) (10/10/84)

-----
I have an Atari 810 Disk Drive that needed had its motor replaced.
It now refuses to read any disk. I believe it has either a speed
problem (possibly a loose belt?) and/or an alignment problem. The
local service center is asking $55 plus parts to fix and $25 if I
just want an estimate of what is needed to repair it. Anyone know
of a cheaper place, can do it themselves, can give me instructions,
	etc.?

I will send the results of the responses to anyone who wishes.

	Thanks in advance,

Those prices are VERY reasonable for what you ask. Point of fact, the
ENTIRE innards can be replaced for about $250 using components available
through surplus outlets when ATARI stopped making the 810.

The repair fees are more for the TIME he must spend on your drive.
Speed is easily maintained by adjusting the speed pot. on the power supply
(rear) board. Alignment is often so time consuming that the entire
mechanism is usually replaced as an expedient.

Depending upon the age of the drive, you might want to replace other parts
as well, for example update of ROMs, and data separator board. Also, there
are closeouts available on the new 1050 disk drive in the $250 price range
(yes, these are NEW!)

So all in all, if they're gonna fix it right for 50 bucks or so, they're
not rippin' ya off!!!
