[net.micro.atari] Using 800XL as a games machine

<<>>
Recently I have seen Atari 800XL's as low as $120.00.
Does anyone know if you can play the Atari 2600 (the original Atari
game machine) cartridges on the 800XL??
I am thinking of buying one for my sister's family as they already have
an 2600, and would like to know if they can still use the old cartridges
on the new 800XL.
If the cartridges don't work, is there anyway to make them work.
I am assumming that both the 2600 and the 800XL use the same
microprocessor, and are otherwise compatiable.
Please respond via EMAIL unless of general interest to the network.

The 400/800 (XL) series generate their graphics in an entirely different
manner. 2600 games are designed with primitive graphics in mind, while the
800 series machines are truly graphics oriented. You'll find that they are
not in the least bit compatible. Atari 5200 games on the other hand, are
almost identical to 800 games (because the machines are almost identical).
