July 1985 ANTIC Table of Contents Page Article 10 ANTIC ANNIVERSARY ALBUM Pictures of some of the attendees at the party for ANTIC's third year of publishing. Several Atari officials attended including Sam Tramiel. 13 EDUCATION: DUCKS, SEAHORSES AND MUPPETS A look at some of the new educational software available for the Atari. 16 EIGHT NEW SYNAPSE GAMES A review of eight of the latest games from Synapse as well as information of the merger of Synapse and Broderbund. 18 130XE: HOW ATARI'S NEW 8-BIT DOES IT A look at some of the technical information having to do with the 130XE including a look at bank switching. 21 CRYPTOQUOTES A program to use on the Atari to help you solve cryptograms. An automatic 'blackboard' for codebreaking. 23 BONUS GAME: STAR VENTURE A space type dodge-em game written by Ron Saari who runs an Atari bulletin board in NJ. Phone (201)-449-3895 24 GUESS THAT SONG A musical show emceed by your Atari. How many notes do you bid to Guess That Song? You can add more songs but it is not a construction type program and not easy to add. 28 WAR GAMES, THE STORY OF S.S.I. An interview with Joey Billings, president of S.S.I. Good article for anyone who likes war simulation type games. 31 BONUS GAME: DARK STAR A space shoot-em-up with some different twists. A first for ANTIC: Both a BASIC and an ACTION! listing of the program is included. 33 SLIDE A Computerized version of the 24-tile puzzle grid. 35 COMPUTER CHESS PROGRAMMING A look at the progress that is being made in the programs for computerized Chess and a look at Odesta Chess from Odesta Corp. 39 OVER FLOW Now you can be the Sanitary Engineer (plumber) you always wanted to be! Keep the pots from overflowing in this scrolling game. 40 EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT EVERY D.O.S. A review of seven different DOS's including Atari 2.5. TOPDOS 1.4 came out looking the best. 48 GAME OF THE MONTH: MINIATURE GOLF This game is an 8 hole miniature golf game that contains two listings. One is the game itself and the second is a construction set listing so you can add holes of your own design. It makes it quite easy to do and also to add them to the original 8 or replace any of the original 8. 74 PRODUCT REVIEWS Software: COMPUTER AMBUSH (S.S.I) GULF STRIKE (Avalon Hill) TRIVIA FEVER (Professional Software, Inc) Cassette Adventures (Level 9 Computing) A review of 8 cassette based adventures from England that look quite good. Some are based on "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien. Hardware: STAR SG-10 PRINTER (Star Micronics) MICROSTUFFER PRINTER INTERFACE (M.P.P.) Comments: Both ANTIC and Analog Computing are smaller than they have been previously but it is quite a good issue. There is an ad by OSS touting their new BASIC XE made especially for the 130XE. There is a response from Spinnaker as to why they might not translate some of their text adventures for the Atari. Once again ANTIC will be having daily bulletins from the Summer CES. If someone can again download them, I'm sure we would all appreciate it. By next show, I'll have the capability. According to an ad by Computer Direct, The Learning Phone cartridge (formally PLATO) is now available for $19.95. This has to be one of the best reasons to buy a modem I can think of (Pardon my editorializing but I am doing all the typing). I just called them and it isn't in stock yet. Till next month, see you at the CES. Kit Kimes AT&T Consumer Products Montgomery Works Montgomery, Il. 60538-0305 ..!ihnp4!mgweed!kek
