An item in the announcements column of the June Mini-Micro Systems talks about two low-cost 3 1/2 inch winchesters being worked up by Tandon. The 20Mb will go for $300 in OEM lots; the 10Mb, which is specifically mentioned as 'planned for use by Atari in the ST series', will 'sell for less than $100 in large OEM quantities'. Access time given for the drives is 85 ms, comparable to the PC-XT (and for that matter, the AT&T 7300). If the above holds true, Tramiel's 'boasts' on low-cost hard disks don't seem nearly so wild.
