[net.micro.atari] Atair ST book

acw@prls.UUCP (Art Willis) (06/03/85)

Saturday 6/1/85, I found a book titled "Presenting the Atari ST"
by L. English and J. Walkowiak, published by Abacus Software. The
Table of Contents is:

     1. Introducing the 16-Bit Processors
	1.1 The True 16-Bit Processors
	1.2 The 68000 Processor
	1.3 The 68000 Instruction Set
1.4 Advanced Features of the 68000

     2. The Architecture of the Atari ST

5.4 Working With Files Under GEM
	5.5 Inside GEM
	5.6 Virtual Device Interface
	5.7 Appliction Environment Services

     6. Communication Between Man and Machine
	6.1 Computer Languages
	6.3 Problem-Oriented Programming Languages
	6.4 Interpretive Languages
	6.5 Higher-Level Programming Languages

     7. LOGO
	7.1 Procedures in LOGO
	7.2 Summary

This is quite a superficial book, containing only information that
I would expect to find in the appropriate set of data-sheets, i.e.
68000, CP/M, GEM, LOGO, and some of the peripheral chips. The
book contains a number of (typographical?) errors, such as no section
6.2 in the TOC (the last 3 sections of chapter 6 are number 6.2, 6.3,
and 6.4 in the book itself). I have not read it completely yet,
but a casual skimming revealed several other such errors.

The authors are German and the book was apparently written in German
as Greg Dykma is listed as the translator. The cost was (I believe)
$17.95.

I got my copy at:

and I believe they accept mail and phone orders.

In Germany this book is published by Data Becker Software (a subsidary
of Auto Becker, a firm, which imports fine American cars to Germany).
It is call "Das Atari ST Premierenbuch".

My opinion about the book: same as the one of Art Willis.

At the Hannover Fair I got a fine hand out from Digital Research
about GEM. In this where on 3 pages much more information
than in the above book on 50 pages.
