I'm looking for information as to what different methods there are to duplicate copy-protected disks. Now before you start screaming `COPYRIGHT' and `Yo-ho-ho' I'll mention that my copy of `Ball Blazer' (which I bought) failed to boot last night and now I have to go through the hassle of getting it replaced from Epyx. If they're prompt it may only take a week or so, if they're like most companies I expect it to take 3 to 4 weeks. Apart from the fact I don't know if I can live without `Ball Blazer' for a month why should I have too? I have never felt easy not having back-ups for my copy-protected programs and have decided to look into the ways available. I don't really care if the system simply duplicates the disk or compresses it into a binary load file, what I'm looking for is reliability and the capability to handle most copy-protection schemes. If anyone has any info on the different systems available, like the Happy drive or The Chip, I'd be interested in hearing from you. --- Kevin Thompson {ucbvax,ihnp4!nsc}!voder!kevin "It's sort of a threat, you see. I've never been very good at them myself but I'm told they can be very effective."

I once had a problem with Jumpman, also distributed by EPYX. I called them to tell them that Jampman would not boot up. They told me to mail it back to them and they would send me another copy. No charge mentioned! (although their internal doc says to send along $5 or $10) So, I sent it out, regular mail, New Jersey to California. About a week and a half later, presto!, one new copy of EPYX sent to me in perfect working order! Therefore, don't panic! EPYX is a very good company to do business with. And if they keep their policy the same as when I dealt with them (~ 1 yr ago), I see no reason to back up the disks they distribute! -- Bill Boutin, Bell Communications Research, Inc., 444 Hoes Lane, Room 4D-336, Piscataway, NJ, 08854 201-699-4700
