[net.micro.atari] First look at ST-520

psc@lzwi.UUCP (Paul S. R. Chisholm) (09/16/85)

Well, I finally found a ST-520 dealer. I'm not impressed with him,
anyway. He claimed to have only one demo disk, he wouldn't let me
put it in myself, and when my nine-year-old tried printing the screen
and halted the machine, he took the demo disk out. He didn't seem too
big on answering my questions, such as "Can you get a second disk
drive?" and "Do you know when GEM Write will be available?" (Yes and
no, respectively.) He seemed to think that the only software currently
available, aside from GEM itself, was some Infocom games.

So, two questions. First, does anyone know of any other ST dealers in
east central New Jersey? (If so, or if you want to know where this guy
is, *MAIL* don't post.)
                  ____ ________ ____ ___ ____
More importantly, what software have you seen on shelves or in your
hands? Announcements, advertisements, and assurances of "Real Soon Now"
don't count. (Neither do beta test copies.)

-Paul S. R. Chisholm The above opinions are my own,
{pegasus,vax135}!lzwi!psc not necessarily those of any
       {mtgzz,ihnp4}!lznv!psc telecommunications company.
(*sigh* ihnp4!lzwi!psc does *NOT* work!!! Use above paths.)
"Of *course* it's the murder weapon. Who would frame someone with a fake?"

If this is Atari's new approach to selective dealers, lets go back to
selling through Toy'R'Us. There you can get a good price, take the machine
home, play with it a couple of days, and , IF YOU DON'T LIKE it, take
it back for a complete refund (try that with a "full-service" dealer).

I haven't yet found a computer dealer worth his commission.

My local dealer has had the Express package (a primitive text processor/
terminal emulator/whatever) for a few weeks. They got the Infocom stuff
in about a week ago, along with a version of the Mince text editor.

520ST software that I have seen in stores:

	From Mark of the Unicorn:

		MINCE emacs-like editor
PC/Intercomm	VT100 emulator, xmodem, kermit, etc.
		HEX arcade like strategy game

	From Infocom:

		Wishbringer	adventure type games
		Zork 1
		Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

	From Mirage:

Express simple word processor, mailing list,
				mail merge, etc.

	From Michtron:

		Mudpies arcade like game

	From SST Systems:

		Chat simple terminal emulator, xmodem

I also saw a note on the Compuserve Atari SIG last night that some stores
have started receiving the Haba C compiler in the last day or so.

I'd have to agree - nothing beats being able to try the machine
out for a few days knowing you have nothing to lose if you are
disappointed.
Also, I don't know why Atari bothered to make a special version
of the machine for the mass marketers, why not just sell the same
520 ST as the computer stores?
