Re the interface between the cassette and the Atari: First, Atari's cassette does the demodulation itself. It sends serial TTL at 600 baud back to the computer. However, it wants analog tones to record. The Atari simply uses a couple of its music voices to generate them. So it is relatively easy to simulate a cassette player with another computer. It is more difficult to simulate a recorder. Secondly to the person who asked about the cheap modems...I am not familiar with the modem itself, but as to software, make sure that it comes with the communication cartridge.
