A week or two ago, someone posted an article describing errors during start-up of the ST. I had the same problems when I first got my ST; a row of little bugs would appear across the middle of the screen and everything stopped. One POSSIBLE explanation for this is that the disk is too close to the video monitor. In an article re-posted to the net concerning the use of 5.25" floppies on the ST, the author mentioned that the ST video monitor puts out unusally high magnetic fields. This might affect the read/write heads on the drive. I had my floppy drive right next to the monitor when I got these errors and after I moved the drive a foot or so away from the monitor I have not had any more problems. - Robert Ling <rling@uw-june.arpa>

Sorry if this is a reposting: I haven't been able to keep up with all the ST mail lately. However, Robert Ling <rling@uw-june.arpa> mentioned seeing funnies on the screen upon booting. According to our local Atari Club (ACORN) newsletter (the "Kernel"), ST's have been shipped with two-sided sticky tape holding some of the chips into their sockets. Unfortunately during shipping the tape expands, forcing these chips OUT of their sockets. The solution is to open the case (after getting the go-ahead from your warrantor), remove the chips, peal off the sticky tape, and reseat the chips. Do this for one chip at a time so you don't swap chips, and be sure to note the orientation. Dan -----------------------------------
