Stores around here (Silicon Valley) are closing out Atari 800XLs at $69.95, and some ads in Antic have Atari 1200XLs at the same price. At these prices, it would probably be better to get a new Atari (with more RAM and a better keyboard) than upgrade the 400. One company is giving a free atari 1200 with every purchase of an inexpensive dot-matrix printer! -- Robert Plamondon {turtlevax, resonex, cae780}!weitek!robert

Sears is selling Ataris real cheap - 600XL for $34.99, and 800XL for $49.99. Oddly, the prices on the display models had not been changed for months. One sign for the 800XL read $179.99 and another $69.99. Is this a sophisticated marketing technique? Since the 600XL ($35) and 1200XL (free) are so cheap they are great candidates for modification/augmentation. For about $5 one should be able to bring the 600XL up to 64K giving it 800XL capability (but no monitor output) in a smaller package. Another idea is to "compatibalize" the 1200XL by replacing the OS ROM with 400/800 ROMS (widely and cheaply available). Has anyone undertaken either of these projects? Jim
