And now for something completely different... I am very interested in the sound and MIDI-features of the ST, but I have some questions: - What are the possibilities of the built in music chip and what are the builtin GEMDOS system calls to use them? I already recovered the sound(x,vol, pitch, oct) and wave() calls, but I don't know yet how to use different voices etc. - Is this chip really as bad as some people suggest? Then I would rather use the MIDI-connections, since I have in mind to buy a MIDI-synthesizer soon. Anybody knows of some (coming) software for MIDI-applications? I'd appreciate the experiences and opinions of some other (music)- interested ST-owners. Thanx, Raoul. -- Raoul Boomsma Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam ...!mcvax!boomsma@ark.UUCP

> - What are the possibilities of the built in music chip and... > Is this chip really as bad as some people suggest?... The GI AY-3-8910/12/13 series are not really music chips, they are noisemaker chips. That is, their purpose is to make noises, some of which may be musical in a general sort of way. They are not what you would pick for serious music work. They are, on the other hand, not bad for using sound in human interfacing -- they are vastly superior to a one-tone beeper! That is how they should be viewed: as a better and more useful replacement for the beeper, not as God's gift to computer music enthusiasts. -- Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!henry
