A lot of aspects with respect to the Atari-520-ST have been discussed here, but until now I haven't seen a word about suitable printers. Hence my question to the net: What printers do you, ST-owners, use with your ST? What are your experiences? > > What printers do you, ST-owners, use with your ST? > What are your experiences? > I use an okidata 82 (modified to 92 compatibility,) but due to some ill thought-out madness from DRI, the only printer that can be used with the desktop is an Epson *x-80. (The print device driver is hard wired for Epson use, the code is unavailable, there is no current way around it.) If you don't want bit-mapped screen dumps, any of the standard micro printers are just fine. The interface is slow however, and does not operate in the background. -- Mark Roddy Net working, Just reading the news. (harvard!talcott!panda!enmasse!mroddy)

I'm posting my reply since others may be interested. I'm using a Panasonic 1091 printer with my Atari 520ST and am quite happy with it. Both text and graphics modes seem to work. [That is, the print-screen function does generate an image of the screen on the printer]. A very minor change in the STWriter configuration was required, something like ESC-H => ESC-T, to turn of superscript or subscript mode. Other than that, most things seem to work fine. Also, an IBM-PC printer cable can be used to attach a parallel printer to the ST. That's easier than trying to figure out what works from the pinouts.

line for bit bucket I tried an olympia model np?? printer on the st and tried to screen dump. It sent one valid line of the screen and then three lines of garbage ,one valid three garbage .... So I went into the printer designation menu and set the printer resolution to the lower setting and then tried to screen dump again. Much to my surprise got a very nice screen dump complete with the bee. Does this mean that the Olympia is mx-80 compatable or that screen dumps work with more than just epson's ? I suspect that any mx-80 workalike will do screen dumps. note I tried to print with a non-functional printer and ended up hung where the only way out was to reboot. read: could be trouble! This was written from memory and could contain inaccuracies. Bill
