I just bought the Unix-like "Micro C-shell" for my ST. The package includes a shell and some Unix-like programs. Major features of the shell include stdin and stdout with redirection and pipes, shell variables, aliases and history substitutions, and shell scripts. Commands include cc (requires the Digital Research compiler), cmp, diff, grep, sed, ls, more, lpr, pr, wc, cat, cd, chmod, cp, mv, df, echo, mkdir, and set. Of course, some of these are built in and some are separate programs. These are not ports of Unix tools, but rather rewrites. All the most common features and options seem to be implemented, with the less common ones omitted. I'm generally pleased with the tools provided, but I do miss some things like 'make'. They tell me that they are working on a version of make to be sold separately. The tools make life much nicer for Unix-types, but of course it is not like real unix. But I'd still recommend the package highly. It is available for $49.95 + $5 shipping + CA tax (if any) from: Beckemeyer Development Tools, Dept. RN 592 Jean Street #304 Oakland, CA 94610 I'm not associated with the above company in any way, so my comments should be unbiased. If you do write them please put the "Dept. RN" on the address -- I told them that there would probably be a lot of interest in net-land, but they doubted that anybody with a VAX or PDP-11 would have an ST. They have agreed to count the number of letters with "Dept. RN" in the address just for fun. Cheers, and happy 'grepping', --Bob
