[net.micro.atari] Origin of term "Byte"

Fleysher.wbst@XEROX.ARPA (Dan Fleysher) (12/05/85)

sorry if this is a repeat message for you.

This is probably ancient history, but does anyone know the origin of the
word "Byte"? Why the "y" ? (pardon the pun). I seem to remember some
relationship to the word "Bit", but beyond that my mind's a blank.
