Maybe we can get of the Amiga vs ST bit and switch over to "Does UNIX really need MMU: discussion. I couldn't help but notice that there have been multiple postings from Dublin, Ireland about how the ST has no mmu, never will and therefore can't run UNIX. Memory manegement is a luxury, not a necessity. I've seen UNIX evolve since its early days, when you could sit down and pretty much see what's where in one weekend if you had the sources. Unix has since changed, but neither then, nor now do I see why MMU is necessary to running unix. I do, of course, assume that the environment is fiendly, and security is not an issue, moreover that programs don't randomly walk all over memory. (this latter may a very strong constraint, seeing some code that is floating around). So my version of the bard's song is: THE ST HAS NO MMU SO WHAT? IT THEREFORE MAY OR MAY NOT RUN UNIX ....:-) (If you had seen earlier postings, it would help) -- USPS: Gyorgy Fekete | ARPA: gyuri@cvl.umd.edu Center for Automation Research | ATT: (301) 454-5858 University of Maryland | UUCP: ..{seismo,allegra,brl-bmd}\ College Park, MD 20742 | !umcp-cs!cvl!gyuri ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
