[net.micro.atari] ST Development Questions......

boiko@cgvax2.DEC (Michael Boiko DDD/N26 264-9427) (12/20/85)

After owning an ST (paid $659 for B/W - mail order) for over 2
months now, I must admit that I'am really *very* pleased with it. My current use
for the ST is as a terminal (PC/Inter Comm - very good VT emulation) accessing
our VAX systems at work. The ST's monochrome 70Hz display must be one of the
best displays around for software development (easy on the eyes).
Since I just mentioned the topic of software development, there are a
few questions I have for anyone out there in netland regarding the ST and
software development.

o When will TDI's Modula-2 development software begin to ship?

o Is there a standalone editor available now or becoming available in
the near future for the ST, other then the Development System's MicroEmacs? In
the PC world there are many editors to choose from (ie.Vedit,Brief,Pmate), when
do you think editors of their abilities and functionality will begin to appear?

o Is there an ST version of DEC's EDT editor existing or being worked
on now? The availability of a reconfigurable editor could help out here.

o As I mentioned above the terminal emulator package I now use is
PC/Inter Comm, which does a very good job, however what would really come in
handy is an emulator which runs in the GEM window environment and allows the
user to switch context between say a dialed-up VAX in the background (80 col.)
and a sizable, scrollable GEM window in the foreground (ST development environ-
ment), similar to MACterm.
Has anyone heard of something similar to this being worked on, or
maybe even available now?

As for all this ST vs Amiga talk, well I wish both companies the best
of luck on their decision to turn away from the "me-too" PC clone path and take
that next step in advancing the state of the art in micro computing.....I've
seen the future and it is bit mapped...

I called them last thursday, and the person on the phone promised me
that all orders received so far will be shipped on Dec. 27. They
apparently had some problems with printing the manuals, or so they
say.
