[net.micro.atari] Copying files from disk A to disk B

franco@iuvax.UUCP (12/22/85)

I just found out how to copy files from one disk to another using a single
disk drive. The reason I was so late in finding out about this is, I think,
that the owner's manual does not mention how to (so I was left with the
impression that I had to wait for the developer kit to get the utilities
to copy files as above). I am sure that many of you with Mac experience
knew how to copy before you even opened your ST package. But I did not
have any Mac time before I opened mine and I think many others are in the
same boat. This message is for that group.

To copy a file from disk A to disk B using one disk drive, open disk A
and select and drag the icon representing the file to be copied to the
disk B icon. Dialog boxes will direct the copying process from there.
You will be asked to insert disk A then B then A and so on depending on
how many files you want copied in much the same way that you are asked to
switch disks during an entire disk copy.

I am sorry for boring many of you with this message but I am SURE that
some people will benefit from it. My life has been made a fair bit
simpler now that I know about this. Thanks to Alan Pratt for letting me
in on this.

One more point: If anyone has suddenly found out how to do something he or
she has been trying to do for some time but did not know how to do because
the manual did not mention it or explained it poorly I think a fair number
of people might be interested in hearing about it.

I hate to have to say this, but my owner's manual has clear (enough)
instructions for inter-disk file copying on pages 53-54:
"If you want to put a copy of a file onto another disk, drag the
icon over to and on top of the icon for that disk." etc. complete with
semi-mockup photo/printout of aforesaid activity.
But rather than clog the phone-lines with items about what people
have found out that is not in their manual, it would be a nice idea to
have some bull. bd. somewhere on which to deposit the accumulated
discoveries from people actually using the machine. In the Amiga group
there seems to be plenty of the kind of information you encourage.
It's a mystery to me why nothing so constructive appears here.
