[net.micro.atari] What printer are you using with your 520ST?

pmr@drutx.UUCP (RastocnyP) (01/03/86)

[Does this bug still exist?]

I'd be interested in finding out what different types of printers people are
successfully using with their Atari 520STs. From the budget dot-matrix to the
esoteric laser, any and all replies are sought. Please email your replies with
the following format:

Manufacturer: Model:
Retail Price: $ Price Paid: $
Where Purchased:
Type (letter/.matrix):
Print Speed:
Replacement Ribbon Prices: $
General Description: (e.g., 10" carriage, ink jet, friction only, 7 fonts)
Problems: (e.g., registration is OK with tractor feed; friction is the pits)
(this thing is a boat anchor because it's too noisy and unreliable)
(I should have bought model Z; the control codes are a disaster)
Caveats: (this model is no longer in production/no longer available)
(the manufacturer is no longer in business)
Comments: (this thing is the greatest thing since sliced bread because...)

		Thanks in advance,

Manufacturer: Epson Model: DX 20
Retail Price: $	Don't Remember	Price Paid: $ 290
Where Purchased: Lyco (Mail Order)
Type (letter/.matrix): Daisy Wheel
Print Speed: 20 cps
Replacement Ribbon Prices: $ (uses standard epson ribbon cartridges)

General Description: Diablo 630 Compatible, Bidirectional Priniting,
Uses standard diablo print wheels, uses stamdard epson ribbon
cartridges, Character Pitches: 10 cpi pica 12 cpi elite 15 cpi
condensed Propotional Spacing (1/120 inch programmable),
Line Spacing: 1/6 inch or 1/48 inch programmable,
Paper: friction feed 7 o 13 inches, Pin Feed with optional tractor,
Universal Interface senses 8 bit parallel (centronics), or Rs232 or
Ieee 488 (GPIB). 1K buffer built in. Nice manual.
Works nicely with STWRITER. The printer configuration file was very
easy to make up because of the excellent documentation.

Problems: Slow (but what do you expect from a < $300 daisy wheel printer),
on the noisy side (about the same as the diablo).
Caveats: Difficult to print 66 lines on a 11" sheet of paper as the
paper out sensor goes off at about the 63'rd line. To get
66, the top margin has to be reduced, resulting in a page
that has too much space at the bottom.
Comments: This printer was purchased for writing letters, short memos
etc. In my opinion, this printer serves that purpose perfectly. The
print quality is excellent (at least as good as any other daisy wheel
that I have seen). The price i believe is the lowest of any daisy
wheel printer (except it brother the Dx-10) on the market.
