[net.micro.atari] Yet another info request

info-atari@ucbvax.UUCP (12/14/85)

As if I hadn't already caused enough trouble, my next question is what are
the best printers to use for (a) Near Letter Quality and (b) no holds barred
(except price) all-out camera ready Letter Quality printing? If high-quality
graphics printing is desired, which ones emerge as best?

Also, is there (please dont laugh) a Fortran available for the 800XL?
If not, is there another language suitable for semi-serious scientific
calculations, if you don't mind waiting a little? Finally, are there
any facilities for setting up a useable library of programs that will
be linked automatically just because they are referenced in a calling
program? Thanks for any assistance that is available.

I am leanly towards getting a 520ST, but I have a few questions.

1. I have read that real soon now we will see the 1024ST's, has anyone
seen one of these yet??

2. Anyone who has priced 520ST's in the L.A. area want to let me in on the
best deals they have located. If anyone knows of a good mail-order house
with a good price let me know. Most of them list 520ST $CALL.

3. I would love to know if anyone has used the Modula-2 available from
England. I tried the Mod-2 for the Mac, tossed the disk and sold the
Mac.

4. Does the developers kit give ALL the stuff one would need for getting
into the nuts and bolts of the 520ST both hardware and software wise? I
noticed one posting where someone was bragging that the 520ST had better docs
(hardware schematics ect..) then the Amiga, but soon after that I find a
sequence of messages asking about how the DMA port worked. Just how good
are the manuals in the developers kit??

5. There simply has to be a way of getting memory. What does one do after
he has piggybacked 1 meg? Has someone come up with a two meg scheme yet?
Would one be able to piggyback a 1024ST and get a two meg machine? Byte, in
the January ish, just had a PREVIEW of the 520ST, what does one have to do to
find info on the 1024ST?

6. What I want is a machine with good, sharp text (sorry Amiga) that has the
info and tools available to get inside the machine. Most importantly I want
to be able to compile programs quickly. Does your 520ST give you these
abilities?

7. I've been hearing about the system ROMs will be here real soon. Has
anyone out there actually run down to your dealer and picked up a set?
Has anyone seen the harddisk yet? At what price?

Just mail this stuff directly to me please. Thanks for the time.

P.S. I would love to see more "hey I just got this and it sucks" or
"this is great buy for the money" info, or even something more in depth
then whether Unix can be ported or the Amiga sucks. For example lets find
out what is the best C out there for the ST ect... I hate to say it but the
amiga board seems to be slightly more informative.
