According to the new ANTIC magazine, De Re Atari is no longer available. They recommend the book 'Advanced Programming Techniques for the Atari' by Linda Schreiber. It is available from TAB books and is close to De Re Atari and is much clearer. Kit Kimes AT&T Consumer Products Montgomery Works Montgomery, Il. 60538-0305 ..!ihnp4!mgweed!kek

It is available from TAB books and is close to >De Re Atari and is much clearer. > > Kit Kimes > AT&T Consumer Products I never had De Re Atari, but I did buy Ms. Schreiber's book _Advanced_Programming_Techniques_for_the_Atari_. I found it to be one of the LEAST clear programming texts I have ever read. I pondered over some chapters for great lengths of time, trying to decipher her incoherent explanations. Now, I am not a graphically inclined person (I had the most trouble with the graphics sections), but I do consider myself to be sufficiently competent with computers in general to be able to understand a text like that. I found this book to be an extremely poor exposition of programming techniques, and I would recommend staying as clear of it as possible. If this book is clearer than De Re Atari, then I shudder to think what that latter book is like. -- David J. Since repeated attempts at mailing have failed, and the subject is of potential wider interest anyway, I am posting a response to the request: >Does any one out there know anything about a book entitled >"DE RE ATARI" ??? How can I get one? Who published it? >Etc.? I understand it is a very good reference for basic >technical information on Atari. <From the front cover> "De Re Atari, Anno Domini MCMLXXI, A Guide To Effective Programming, 400/800 Home Computer", APX-90008 <from the inside front cover> Distributed By The ATARI Program Exchange P.O. Box 3705 Santa Clara, CA 95050 To request an APX Product Catalog, write to the address above, or call toll-free: 800/538-1862 (outside California) 800/672-1859 (within California) Or call our Sales number, 408/727-5603 (c) 1982 Atari, Inc. - - - - - I ran out and bought mine a year and a fraction ago, when they were obviously unloading the 800 line. The local technical bookstore was unable to get delivery on it then, so I went directly to Arari's APX - I had a catalog then - and got it by mail. Seems to me, it was $19.95 or the like, but I wouldn't bet on it. If you can still contact them, it is certainly worth getting - it is all I have ever heard said about it plus quite a bit more. If they claim it can't be bought any more, see if they will agree - in writing - for you to make a copy of an existing one, for free or for a nominal fee. If they will, I'll be glad to work something out with you. It is an absolute 'must have' reference. An aside: the other 'must have' is their "ATARI Home Computer System Technical Reference Notes, includes: Operating System User's Manual, Operating System Source Listing, and Hardware Manual". Same source, 500 or so pages of EVERYTHING KNOWN by the developers about the HW/SW!!! I remember it at maybe $29.95, but wouldn't bet on that memory either. FROM: Brian G. Thanks in adavance, Sincerely, Gary McNees /* ---------- */ In one of the atari magazines (either ANTIC or ANALOG somebody asked the same question. Their answer was that the book is impossible to find, but there is a book out (I forget the name!) that is supposed to cover what is in DE RE ATARI, but in a much more readable format. You should look through the last two or three issues of those magazines (I'm almost positive, that it should be in the ANTIC!). If you find the answer, please post it, and I will do the same ! The book 'Your ATARI Computer' by Lon Poole is just about a bible for Atari owners. It has all the stuff you need, most of what De Re Atari has. I'd say it is a must have for atari owners.

- Since there has been some interest in finding the book, De Re Atari, I thought that I would mention where I saw a couple of copies of it for sale. Last night, March 25, I was at Computer Literacy ato pick up a copy of some magizine. I saw two copies of De Re Atari there. They probably will not last long, so you had better hurry if you want one. By the way Computer Literacy is the largest computer book store that I have seen. In ten minutes there I found five books that I wanted to buy. Now if computer books were not so expensive; one of the ones that I was looking at cost $76.00! The store hours are; M-F 9:30 AM to 8 PM and Sat. 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. They are at 520 Lawrence Expressway, Sunnyvale, Calif. 94086, between Central Expressway and highway 101. Their phone number is (408)-730-9955. Tom Granvold
