I'm considering buying a terminal for home use, but I also have an ST in my plans too. My question is: are the vt100 emulators for the ST good enough to do a lot of work on? Do they properly handle inverse video, "curses" curser movement (I'll be working on Unix systems), and how effective are they when using Emacs? Do they have file transfer capability or at least buffer capture? I'll be using a 1200 baud modem, will there be much difference in speed between a terminal and the emulators at that speed? I'd appreciate hearing your comments on the different emulators that are out. Thanks in advance, -- Ray Roux {ucbvax|decvax}!trwrb!trwspp!spp3!rroux

A couple weeks back I posted a message asking if the ST, used as a terminal emulator, could properly handle inverse video, "curses" intense programs (like maybe rogue), and my favorite editor Emacs. Since I got a number of messages from people who also wanted to know that info I'll just summarize the responses here. First off, "Thanks!" to all the people who took the time and effort to answer my questions. I got five messages from people who are using Mark of the Unicorn's PC/InterComm emulator. It handles all the "features" I was looking for plus it can handle Kermit, XMODEM, and ASCII file transfers. A common remark has been "I can't recommend this software enough". Other features are programmable function keys and an excellent manual. I also received responses from people using the built-in VT52 emulator that is "good enough for Emacs and other UNIX work". One thing about this s/w is that you should use a modified termcap entry (available on the net). Thats the only two emulators that people have reported, but at least my question was answered - the ST is quite usable as a terminal and that sure makes a great excuse for buying one :-) -- Ray Roux {ucbvax|decvax}!trwrb!trwspp!spp3!rroux

I was recently demonstrated a graphics terminal emulator, AnsiGraf by Grafikon. It seems very complete and reliable. I am told it should be ready for release very soon.
