I have been following the discussion on upgrading the 800XL with the 65816 processor.The main problem that I see is that ATARI didn't use a standard 6502 in the 800XL it's a special version made for them that has some of the pinouts changed and new signals added to the chip.This chip is code named "SALLY" and in the 800XL repair manual is says "6502c (modified)"pg 1-5.In particular the r/w pin is 36 and a new input is"HALT" at pin 35.All of the 65xx family manuals that I have, don't contain a chip like this.
