[net.micro.atari] Development software

info-atari@ucbvax.UUCP (02/11/86)

I am interested in doing some software developement on my ST. Several friends
have the Atari developers package and/or Megamax C, and my general impressions
from listening to them are that:
1)DR C is unbearably slow in the link stage, and the Megamax C is faster
in compile/link than the DR C links out of a 1040K ST ramdisk.
2)The developers pack documentation is big, but rather difficult to sift
      through.

I am interested in creating my own SIMPLE multitasking operating system and
also a compiler as a school project, so I do need rather complete and
documented BIOS listings, addresses, GEM info, etc. What I would like is a
review of Megamax C from anyone doing developement work with it. Please
describe:
     - compile/link times
     - quality of code produced
     - documentation and support
     - bugs and quirks (does code longer than 32K have to be broken up and
linked like Mac Megamax? Is this a problem? etc...)
     - features (ease of gem support, floating point accuracies, etc)

While I lean towards C, I am not adverse to other languages. I would also
like to hear from those doing developement with other products. Any comments
on other C's, Modula's, Pascal's, Forth's, or other languages is appreciated.

Also if you have any information about the knowledge that may be gleaned
from Abacus books 'ST Internals' and their GEM reference manual versus
Atari doc's you might pass this along as well.

                             thanks! -Sam
P.S. I confess to being a complete novice at the net. Please direct your
