[net.social] Posting pictures on the wall

bstempleton (02/08/83)

I read all these articles from people complaining about what people
post on walls. I really wonder where this rediculous attitude comes
from in society. Why do you care what people post or say? It's only
what they actually DO that is important. Why are so many people motivated
to attack what others think and say? If it offends you to the point of
wanting to take action against them, then I think there is something wrong
with you.

Many argue that what people say and write prompts others to improper action,
and this may well be true, but you had better have some proof of this before
you force anybody to stop doing something.

I do know this for certain. If more people realized that words are only
words, then there would be a great deal less death and hardship in the
world.

I agree with the poster who feels people are over-reacting to "offensive"
words and pictures; as he pointed out, it's really people's actions that
matter.
However, I do draw a distinction between a public situation and space that
is "owned" by someone; posting *anything* (nude photos, religious pamphlets,
political tracts) in a public place is distracting and annoying. I tend to
put such things in the same catagory as grafitti; it's detracts from the
overall appearance of the space.
People should be free to post whatever they like in space that belongs to
them; I don't keep anything more "offensive" than a Snoopy calendar on the
walls of my private office, but certainly respect other peoples's right to

have anything they like on the walls of theirs. If I find their choice of
"wallpaper" disturbing, I'll make a point of not going into their office;
demanding that they re-decorate to suit my personal tastes strikes me as
unfair and childish.

"private space" becomes public sometimes, is one problem. when i have to go
work with someone in hir office, and there is offensive material displayed,
of whatever kind, i am very uncomfortable. besides trying not to look at
whatever it is, i am wondering what the heck kind of a person i am working
at close quarters with, and often wishing i were not. this is, at best,
distracting.
