I grew up in a small city (Pittsburgh Pa.) and left to work in Chicago because I wanted to make MONEY. I still talk to my parents 1 or 2 times a year. Still a mercenary C. J. Holzwarth

This may confirm some people's suspicions.... I was born and raised in a small city on the 5th planet of Vega. Our tour ship broke down while visiting this quaint planet of yours and we have to wait for a parts shipment. We decided to play the part of natives to pass the time; the part will be here in about 250 of your years, so it is more of an inconvenience than anything else. If you find that hard to believe, how about the fact that there are still 2 warrants and a paternity suit out for me under my real name back home? Would you believe that Georgia Tech isn't located in my home town and due to an unusual set of circumstances I decided Georgia Tech was the best place for my graduate work (since I can't get back to good ole Vega U)? I was born and raised in the Electric City (Schenectady, New York; so named because it is home to General Electric), was persuaded to pursue a technical major at Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, New York (up in the boonies), then got a job at Bell Laboratories (make that American Bell, Inc/ ED&D, no AT&T Information Systems/ED&D, NO!! AT&T Information Systems Laboratories. whew!!!!) in Lincroft, New Jersey. They sent me to get my MS at USC in Los Angeles and now I'm back in Joisey (the armpit of America) and missing the palm trees, freeways, and sunshine; but not the smog. Re: the Hovde effect which allegedly makes everyone return to Lafalot, IN But let's not forget the Hansen effect, (Named after Arthur G. Hansen, the recent president of Purdue who was offered a better job at a better location and moved to Texas). I'd say 99% of the Purdue students are more influenced by the Hansen effect than the Hovde effect. I know I was.... Also, when I was there, more people were comparing Lafayette to the bottom of a digestive tract than the bottom of a funnel. Rick Adams Overjoyed to be out of Lafayette and no intention of moving back. Located in Reston, VA (this week anyway)

My mother bore me in Pomona, CA; my parents subsequently bore me to Arizona, where I spent most of my childhood. Two of my professors at Arizona State had sparkling fresh PhD's from Purdue, and (surprise!) they really knew their stuff. So I figured Purdue must have a reasonably decent C.S. department. Decent, yes.... I came to Purdue for grad school. When I got my MSCS, I left for a position in the "real world". Unfortunately, corporations are imbued with an atmosphere of competition, not only "Let's beat IBM's product" (I worked for Burroughs, in Wayne, MI and Downingtown, PA, for less than 2 years total), but the competition between people within the company for favor from the management. I found out that Purdue's Comp Center had some vacancies; I applied; I was accepted; I accepted. (The fact that I made good friends in the [West] Lafayette, IN [home of Purdue] area during grad school helped.) So I moved back here, and am likely to stay a while, especially since I am now a homeownee [sic].... This is said to be a demonstration of the "Hovde effect" (named for the late Frederick L. Hovde, former president of Purdue): "The world is a funnel with Lafayette at the bottom." In other words, once you come to Lafayette, you can never leave permanently. (The life story of my PUCC colleague Jeff Schwab, from grad school on, is remarkably similar to mine.) You will always come back. You cannot escape!! But it's a nice enough area, so why escape? (Answer: I miss mountains. But that's not enough to make me move away.) -- Jeff Sargent/pur-ee!pucc-h:aeq
