[net.social] Ya gotta be kidding

marc@pyuxn.UUCP (09/10/83)

Come on !!
I may be new to this news group, and perhaps its a slow month, but
Ya gotta be kidding. There are people who type in their experiences of
first dates of computers. Lets get real !! It's a machine !! It can't
think. It can't generate thought. Why are people informing others of
the first time they typed on a computer keyboard.

There are so many worthwhile social issues to speak of.. For example

   - Why are hackers often socially backward ?

   - What makes one become a hacker, what is the driving force ?

   - Why are hackers getting such publicity nowadays (e.g. WARGAMES)

   - Why do systems programmers, by and large, have the same attitudes on
wine, women, song and philosophy ?

                                                 Maybe this will generate
                                                    interesting conversation
                                                 ************************

"What is the driving force that makes a hacker a hacker?"

Computers (& hacking) enable me to do things I couldn't do anywhere else.
These include doing creative/constructive tasks (certain programs), finding
out about other people (this Network), making money, and other things which
you all know about. Also, I am constantly learning while I hack.
Any other reasons, anyone?

There are so many worthwhile social issues to speak of.. For example

   	- Why are hackers often socially backward ?

They don't care for most humans.

   	- What makes one become a hacker, what is the driving force ?

Love of power.

   	- Why are hackers getting such publicity nowadays (e.g. WARGAMES)

Because they deserve it. Hopefully the popular image of the computer nerd
will be updated to reality.

   	- Why do systems programmers, by and large, have the same attitudes on
wine, women, song and philosophy ?

Unix is like sex - once you've had it, you can't do without it.

What attitudes on wine, women, song, and philosophy?

debray@sbcs.UUCP (Saumya Debray) (09/15/83)

What? OF COURSE our VAX thinks!! Sometimes when a LOT of people are
logged on, of course, she feels threatened and talks very slowly, and
there are times when she'll withdraw into herself completely (the
guru of our clan would say she'd "crashed") if something's REALLY
bugging her. So sure she's a little schizoid, but WHADDYA MEAN she
doesn't think?! You carbon-chemistry chauvinist, you!!
