[net.social] Hair, marriage, and "sexism"

knudsen@ihnss.UUCP (09/20/83)

I have often wondered why women seem to wear their hair shorty, frumpier,
etc. as they get older (and busier). I would agree with all the explanations
offered so far.

However, I wonder why the original poser of the question felt sso defensive
about the "sexist" explanation -- "to appear less attractive." There must
be situationss where women would rather appear less feminie or available.
A few years ago some of the "libbers" advocated dressing as drably as possible.
I don't ssee why anyone should apologize for seeing some truth in this explanation, any more than the others.

PS: You can have it both ways -- wair hair up & frumpy at work, then let
it down long when you want to look good.
