A recent comment in net.singles said that an employee hired people
who were unhappily married as they would work a lot to avoid the
situation at home.

Why is it that some people have problems at home seem to lapse into
workaholism something that is less socially destructive than lets say
alcoholism or becoming ineffective. Why is it that some people can
drown their troubles by concentrating on their work while for most
people, domestic or personal problems destroy or at least hamper their
working effectiveness.

For single people who are lonely, why do some drown their troubles by
hacking away in a "computer room on Thanksgiving" while others go to
bars and drink themselves into a stupor.

Note some people may get useful work done on the Thanksgiving. Others
may just waste time by playing games, writing or reading the net or
if they are 'doing work' may be so distracted that they don't see their bugs
or worse make drastic editing mistakes that cause them to loose the work
done previously, i. e. become counterproductive.
