as far as naming kids and keeping one's maiden name after marriage --
i never even considered keeping my maiden name after i was married--
unfortunately, i can't give a good reason why or why not -- one thing
i do feel strongly about is hyphenated names -- i find them terribly
confusing and would not like to give one to any of my childern and will
hope ny daughter's at least do not try and hyphenate theirs when they get
married -- i do understand women keeping their maiden names particularly if
they are in business and are better known by their un-married names then
their married ones -- keeping the maiden name is probably less confusing --
as far as first names go when it came time to name my childern i picked
names both my husband and i liked and never responded to parental pressure--
[my first born was a boy, my mother-in-law wanted him to be named after
my husband -- Donnie Dale King, Jr., fortunately, i flatly refused, their
are limitations] i compromised and kept the middle name, but he is Michael--
my daughters names were picked a little more at random -- Summer Elizabeth and
Autumn Jayne [i've heard all the cute jokes about the seasons, it was NOT planned
that way] i tried to pick names that my childern would like when they were grown,
that were unusual enough not to be common and pretty -- i have heard other
people pick names for more unusual reasons -- ie "because it would sound better
in print, because the initials would spell something weird" i think when it comes
time to naming childern it should be a joint decision and you should consider
how the child might feel at some time in the future -- names that are cute
when a child is little might not sound that way when the child grows up --
