#N:uiucuxc:21100003:000:1735 uiucuxc!pking Feb 17 15:55:00 1984 as far as naming kids and keeping one's maiden name after marriage -- i never even considered keeping my maiden name after i was married-- unfortunately, i can't give a good reason why or why not -- one thing i do feel strongly about is hyphenated names -- i find them terribly confusing and would not like to give one to any of my childern and will hope ny daughter's at least do not try and hyphenate theirs when they get married -- i do understand women keeping their maiden names particularly if they are in business and are better known by their un-married names then their married ones -- keeping the maiden name is probably less confusing -- as far as first names go when it came time to name my childern i picked names both my husband and i liked and never responded to parental pressure-- [my first born was a boy, my mother-in-law wanted him to be named after my husband -- Donnie Dale King, Jr., fortunately, i flatly refused, their are limitations] i compromised and kept the middle name, but he is Michael-- my daughters names were picked a little more at random -- Summer Elizabeth and Autumn Jayne [i've heard all the cute jokes about the seasons, it was NOT planned that way] i tried to pick names that my childern would like when they were grown, that were unusual enough not to be common and pretty -- i have heard other people pick names for more unusual reasons -- ie "because it would sound better in print, because the initials would spell something weird" i think when it comes time to naming childern it should be a joint decision and you should consider how the child might feel at some time in the future -- names that are cute when a child is little might not sound that way when the child grows up --
