Does anyone know for certain what the "socially correct" interval is between the time invitations are mailed out and the date of the wedding? We've been trying to locate the information and have gotten answers (opinions) ranging from 2 months to 3 weeks. Anyone an Emily Post expert out there? Thanks in advance. I'd say four-five weeks for domestic invitations with two months for overseas. Trisha

I found the same discrepancy - various sources of information say anywhere from 2 months to TWO weeks. Since my invitations asked people to respond by 2 weeks before the wedding, it would have been pretty stupid to mail them out two weeks before!! You like to know who is coming, if you are feeding them. I don't know about the States, but mail service just isn't as good as it used to be, in Canada. I used to be able to get a letter across the continent in 2 or 3 days but now I'm lucky if it goes 50 miles in that time. Letters from here to the States (we invited several people from the States) typically take 10 days to 2 weeks to get there (then the reply has to come back). I mailed the overseas ones about 2 months ahead and the domestic ones in the following week. The last ones were mailed 6 weeks ahead. I felt that I would like to have a month's warning if I were being invited to a wedding, especially if it involved coming in from out of town and perhaps booking overnight accomodation. Since the 'etiquette' seems so variable, I think you should use common sense with consideration for how much warning you would like people to have (the more they have, the less likely they are to have other commitments) and how much notice you would like to have. In that respect it is a good idea to give the date before which you would like the responses. --from the sssstickkky keyboard of JAM ...!{ihnp4|clyde|decvax}!watmath!wateng!jamcmullan

Thanks to all who posted or mailed comments on the timeliness of mailing Wedding Invitations. The "out of town" ones went out last Wednesday; the rest hit the SnailMail today. That gives us 5 weeks to the wedding; 4 till we need to know "final" numbers (for the caterer, etc). Thanks again. Chris Jachcinski AT&T Bell Labs *!ihnp4!ihdba!cmsj
