OK, folks, what's the fuss about makeup? Makeup is just like clothing. It can be very benificial, very attractive, very silly, very repugnant, or even thoroughly repulsive, just as modern clothing can be. The LACK of makeup can be seen in the same light, as it depends completely on who is looking, and at whom. Furthermore, as is easily seen in any public place, clothing that one individual finds very repulsive may indeed attract another person. <I'm not talking outrageous exposure here, we can stick to bright colors, various types of fit, etc...> There's no doubt that excess makeup is distictly repulsive to a lot of people, but it's also clear <for reasons that I personally can't comprehend> that it is attractive to others. The only tragedy that I can see that involves makeup is the mismatch between the makeup and the person. After all, it's clear that dress and makeup control to a great part the type of people that you will meet. If your style of dress/makeup/behavior are slanted toward something you don't want to be, that's tragic. Personally, I agree that excess in anything (clothing, makeup, voice, mannerisms, exposure, non-exposure, what-have-you) is unattractive, but then again I don't claim to be anywhere near the norm for a 31 year old attached male, so what I think shouldn't necessarily matter to anyone else. Tolerance, folks, try it. It's easy to say, it rolls trippingly off the tongue, and it makes you feel better. It makes your life easier, your stomach stop hurting, and releases your mind for more important considerations. -- TEDDY BEARS ARE SOFT AND CUDDLY. TRY ONE YOURSELF! ***** Two thoughts on this subject: a) make-up is part of a whole contradictory culturization process most women go through -- you are too female (and must shave various parts of your bodily hair, bathe several times a day, etc.) AND you are not female enough (and must artificially enhance your "feminine" features through the use of cosmetics, padded bras, etc.) b) the cosmetics business makes billions of dollars in profit; the sector that traffics in make-up has built an extremely profitable product line based in part on exploiting the insecurity and vanity of certain women (and men -- Marshall Fields now has a Clinque salon in the middle of it's mens store) Trisha O Tuama
