[net.sport.football] pre-season ponderings

pvs@houxh.UUCP (08/25/83)

Here is my opinion on your suggested ponderings..
First of all Georgia does not stand a chance of even being in the top
twenty without Walker. I just can't imagine a Georgia football team,
one that depended on him so much for everything, even for leadership,
do that well anymore. I may be wrong if Vince Dooley came up with
another superstar freshman sensation that I don't know about, besides
those aren't easy to come by anyway. The sports writers might think
otherwise and rank 'em anyway because of their past success, eg. USC.

As for SMU, I thought they should have won the championship last year.
I know, they din't have a tough schedule, big deal. Penn State got
cremated by Alabama, a team that didn't even finish the season in the
top twenty(? at least I don't think they did, they were out of it for
a while), and SMU tied with LSU(?) a team that stayed there all season
and climbed pretty high, second or third I believe. Did you see that
early game between PSU and Nebraska? The refs gave PSU the game with
a pass interference call that wasn't and another bad call on the TD
catch that 'won' the game for them. One of the magazines I read(forget
the name) predicts SMU to finish 6-5 this season w/o the express. I
tend to agree with them there.

Penn State doesn't have a chance at the national champs this year. Of
course, Paterno always comes up with a good team every year, but never
a championship team (they lucked out last year). I do think they will finish
in the top ten though.

Now for Michigan. There is no doubt that they will hurt without Carter
but he wasn't that key a player. He was a good reciever but they need
more than just a reciever to win. They will win the Big-10 this year only
because Bo, like Paterno, always has a decent team. But what about Ohio
State?? Does anyone know about how they are expected to do this year?

I also see a newcomer in the top ten (other than Arizona) and thats
Tennessee, whats so good about those Vols? I do know they have been half
way decent in the past but that good??(#1 in one poll!!!)

......Entering Photosphere......

Listen all you scum out there. Penn State has had five undefeated seasons. How
many times have we won the national championship? One.

Yes, we've lost Warner and Blackledge. Who cares? When we lost Fusina every-
body said "Well, that's about it for Psu's chances for the next 50 years..."

......Entering Core, hull beginning to fuse......

What is it with everybody? We are, and have been, one of the top 20 (and
usually 10) teams in the nation, but every time the pre-season picks come
out ... "Well, PSU won last year, but they had a bad call in their Nebraska
game, and SMU was undefeated (Against such great teams as "The George Henry
Memorial Football Team"), and they're all just a bunch of lying, drinking,
scumbags out there in Pennsylvania."

Would you people PLEASE give us a break! We have the best coach in the nation,
we have some of the best players in the nation, We have a chance!!!!

Hey John, I never denied the fact that Paterno was good, he is and like I
said earlier, he always comes up with a good team. If I recall right
PSU's last undefeated season was in 1978 when they capped the great
season with a brilliant loss to Alabama!! That year Alabama was given
the crown despite the fact that USC had defeated them earlier in the
season and had also beaten Michigan in the Rose Bowl.
You think PSU is picked on, well try being from a west coast school
other than USC. I personally attend U of Washington and we don't get
enough attention from anyone. Take for example last year. We were
#1 for six weeks until Sports Ill. came up with a 'real' article about
us, and that was because we lost to Stanford,oh sorry, I mean Elway.
Did you see that?? He had a damned cover picture because he defeated
the #1 team in the country. And Stanford didn't exactly have the
best year either. Did Washington get any recognition after we beat
ASU at ASU, when they were riding high? Or when we beat UCLA when
they were also in the top five?? To top it all off, we finished the
season ranked #5 behind, you guessed it ASU and UCLA. We also had ONE
'nationally televised' game last year, the Cal game I think it was, where
the stupid world series(baseball) was broadcast instead and they occasionally
stopped off at Husky stadium for an update, whats worse is they didn't show
the baseball game, but the people trying to clear the field of water from
the rains that delayed the game!! So don't tell me about "poor PSU".

I guess I got a little carried away but when I read your article
about PSU not getting recognition I decided to say that you aren't
the only ones, if thats even true. Did you know we had 11 players
drafted in the NFL last season plus some to the USFL?? (most among
all the colleges, tied with USC) and ASU was in second with 10. The
PAC-10 had the most players drafted than any other conference, just
goes to show we're good by pro standards if not by college.
