Fortune smiled on Northwestern this weekend, allowing
the purple team from Evanston to score not only a touchdown
but a field goal as well -- NU's first points of the season.
In a truly perverse twist of fate, those ten points were
enough to beat Indiana and put Northwestern at the top of
the Big Ten. When asked about the defeat, most Indiana
fans were quick to change the subject to basketball.

Syracuse drops out of the Bottom Twenty with the Orangemen's
third consecutive victory, over Rutgers. At 3-1, SU is off
to their best start since 1979, when they were 6-5 and beat
McNeese State in the Liberty Bowl. (Who could forget that?)

Kent State takes undisputed hold of Bottom Twenty honors
with their 16th consecutive defeat, to Northern Illinois.
Rice had been a strong contender, but their 15 game losing
streak ended with a win over Southwestern Louisiana.

P.S. If you have a favorite non-competitive football team,
      tell us about it.

Concerning favorite non-competitive teams, doesn't the whole Ivy
League qualify? :-) (I can see flames in my future!)
