I am a Northwestern graduate. While I was in school, during 4 years NU won, I think, 4 games and tied 1 or 2. They were well into the ultimate losing streak when I left. Last year, they finally turned their program around. I think that it is disgusting what Iowa did to them last week. Over 700 yards total offense. Hayden Fry ought to be shot! This is about as bad as the 84-13 Nebraska romp over Minnesota! What do these schools prove by running up the score like that. I kind of liked Iowa before this game, but now I hope thankful that the Illini whupped them the week before (33-0, I think). NU is obviously not as good as it was last year. Iowa's performance was way overkill. The only nice thing about it was that they let NU score some TDs. I normally hate Michigan, but I hope they whup Iowa this year and knock them out of the Rose Bowl chase. I believe that NU can win 2 or 3 games this year. They already beat Indiana and they still have to play Minnesota and Purdue. Hail to Purple, Hail to White La-de-da (I forget the words) Northwestern. Scott Pector P.S. By the way, I wish NU would get put on probation to convince some of the stellar prep athletes that NU bribes as well as the best. To compete in Division IA, one has to try harder. Let's also lower those entrance score requirements to those of the meat factories (Ohio State, USC, Oklahoma, Georgia, etc.).

#R:ihuxw:-52400:uokvax:5700001:000:1970 uokvax!ron Oct 17 10:16:00 1983 i'm not really here to defend nebraska, (esp. being from ou), but you can't really fault teams like nebraska for whomping other teams. sure, you've seen the scores, but have you seen the games? it's not like nebraska has their first string out there the whole game, trying to run up the score. case 1) when nebraska embarassed penn state the first game of the season, their third touchdown of the game (near the beginning of the second quarter) was from their 2nd strng q-back to their 3rd(!!) string tight-end. case 2) did anyone see the nebraska/ucla game?? i saw the last few minutes. nebraska was up by about 30something points, and trying NOT to score. they had the ball on about the ucla 19, it was 4th and 9, so they RAN it. their 4th string halfback (the announcers didn't even know his name) blasted around the end for a first down. nebraska couldn't help but score, so on the last couple of plays they actually fell on the ball inside the 5 yard line. conclusion: sometimes it is actually true, one team's bench can beat another team's first string. what is the coach supposed to do, gather his third string offense around and say "ok guys, let's go sit on that ball for the second half!!"? (which is exactly what osborne HAS done at times) it's hard for some teams (like nebraska, ou etc.) NOT to score at times. hell, i've seen some ou games where some starters come out the second half with their shoulder pads off. sure, the scores look bad, but i don't think this kind of action (the second/third/...strings scoring) deserves criticism. if nebraska kills ou 55 to 3 this year, and do it with their third/fourth string, i'm not going to be down on nebraska, i'm going to be down on the sooners ron ps. marcus, where are you??? (just kidding. he's officially off the team now. c'est la via', marcus may be gone, but watch out for johnson and tillman!) ...ctvax!uokvax!ron ...duke!uok!uokvax!ron

#R:ihuxw:-52400:uokvax:5700002:000:998 uokvax!craig Oct 17 11:15:00 1983 I agree with Ron. (I, too, happen to be an Oklahoma football fan, even though my hometown is near St. Louis) The games that I have seen where OU has run up the score was NOT caused by Barry (Switzer) wanting a lop-sided victory. They were caused by the depth that OU possessed at that time. I mean, when you have a 4th string that can outplay your opponent's 1st string, what can you say? (I would like to see an Oklahoma vs. Northwestern football game - would be interesting). AND, a lot of the players that play the last part of such games are freshmen/sophomores who do not see much playing time (and would like nothing better that to score a touchdown). So, they go out on that field to play. And score. Regardless of the current score of the game. Like Ron said, what is the coach supposed to say to them? Don't try? Come on. Be real. Craig Miller ...!ctvax!uokvax!craig ...!duke!uok!craig p.s. too bad Mizzou didn't beat Nebraska. I would have liked to see that.
