[net.sport.football] National Champ Isn't State Champ

----------
Funny thing, Miami won the "national championship" in the polls,
but LOST their state championship (Florida/FSU/Miami) on the field.
My team (Florida Gators) were the only team to beat Miami this year,
28 - 3 (and won the state championship outright by beating FSU 53 - 14).
In fact, FSU almost beat Miami, too, losing by one point (17 - 16, I think)
on a last-minute field goal. Yep, a tough state to play football in.
According to a story in the San Jos'e Mercury, that 25 point Florida margin
was the biggest one by which a national championship team had ever been beaten
in the same year they won the championship.

This must have helped Florida in the polls, because the Gators climbed
from 11th to 6th in both the AP and UPI polls for their first Top Ten finish
ever.

Winning the national championship should make Miami easier to beat
in our mutual opener this Sept. 1 in Tampa (I hope).
Ask Penn State about early openers as defending champion.

(Please excuse me if I effervesced or gloated too much -- this made my day)
