[net.sport.football] Probation / Re: Clemson No. 1

phipps@fortune.UUCP (Clay Phipps) (09/01/84)

I can't understand why players who were still in high school
when Charley Pell left Clemson should suffer for Pell's mistakes.
The fans also get punished, by the elimination of TV appearances.

Far better to remove the guilty coaches from their present jobs
or stick them with a hefty fine for some number of years related
to the duration of the offense. Or take TV money away (by fine ?)
from the school at which the offenses were committed,
but allow the games to be telecast (they would have been played anyhow).

By the way, the rumor in Florida, since the NCAA began
their preliminary investigation, was that the NCAA
was trying to get Pell personally, not Florida as an athletic program.

I wonder if Miami (Fla.) will be the next school under investigation,
given their rather sudden success [note for Gator Haters:
this was written the Friday night *before* the Gators' game with Miami].
