[net.sport.football] bad refs

All this talk about bad calls helping Texas win football
games makes me recall a game that occured (I believe) two years ago
between Penn State and Nebraska. With 1:18 left in the game,
Nebraska scored to put them up by 4 pts. (I don't remember the
exact score, the memory is too painful.) After the kickoff, Penn
State managed to get withing field goal range without the help of
the refs, but that was as far as they could get alone. So they
called out for help to the refs, who promptly obliged by calling
interferance on the Huskers in the end zone when the nearest Husker
never came within 3 yards of the receiver (terribly bad coverage, I
must admit, but it makes it nearly impossible to commit
interferance!) To add insult to injury, on the next play, the refs
gave Penn State the winning touchdown by moving the sideline over
2 yards. After the game, the Penn State receiver ADMITTED that he
was out of bounds in the end zone, and that the touchdown should
not have counted. With two seconds left in the game, Nebraska had
to score on the kickoff return, which, of course, didn't happen.
There, now that I have finally complained to everyone who
could possibly care, maybe I can forget that game!
