[] Ok, let's hear it, college football fans... Why is BYU (B Y who?) number 1 in the country in the polls? (please note the date on this article - I haven't seen this week's poll results yet... maybe they'll dropped BYU to 2 or 3 or something?) After seeing Oklahoma tie Texas, who was number 1 at the time, beat Nebraska, who was number 1 at the time, and beat Oklahoma State, who was number 3 (I think) at the time, I don't see how there can be any question who's the best team... But, since apparently they are going to be in different bowls, I guess we'll never know for sure who the best team is... Has BYU played anyone real this season? (that is a serious question since I really have no idea who they played... but, from what I've heard, their schedule was a joke compared to Oklahoma's...) Maybe a net poll would be appropriate on BYU (kinda like ABC, eh)? Ok, here we go: << Should BYU be number 1, and why or why not? >> Send your reply to me (..!ihnp4!we53!busch!dcm), and I'll summarize in a couple of weeks (if, of course, there's any response at all...). -- Craig Miller (OU graduate...) ..!ihnp4!we53!busch!dcm The Anheuser Busch Companies; St. Louis, Mo.

I would also question BYU's claim to #1. The latest Sporting News (11/26/84) had them rated at #7, with Florida, OK, OK State, Ohio State, and Nebraska rounding out the top five. I tend to belive them for pretty accurate ratings. They don't follow the "popular" polls and I have found them over the last few years to be quite good, especially in college basketball. Anyway, every sportscaster here in Denver thinks they deserve their rating of #1. I'm not too sure about that. The composite records of their opponents this year is 50-75-3, with the best team having a 6-4-0 record. Not too impressive. My vote would have to go with Oklahoma (even though I despise Barry Switzer). I only vote for them because Florida is on probation till hell freezes over, so they really shouldn't be counted. Would someone please mail me (or tell me where to find) BYU's complete schedule for this season, along with the scores? It's time to start a raging argument around here. It's been rather quiet lately... Thanks, Diane Wilkerson ..!hopd3!dvw

BYU *could* have had a chance to prove itself #1, except for one thing: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ The Holiday Bowl made offers to a lot of schools, but they chose $$$$ rather than showing whether or not an undefeated team was really any good. -- The Ice Floe of Larry Bickford {amd, decwrl, sun, idi, ittvax}!qubix!lab You can't settle the issue until you've settled how to settle the issue.
