[net.sport.football] What Does the NYT Say About BYU Ranking?

ewf@ihu1m.UUCP (E. W. Foster) (12/03/84)

Anybody from the NY/NJ area know what the NY Times computer
rankings have to say about BYU. As I understand it, their
ranking scheme takes things into account like schedule,
opponents record, etc. If you could tell us how BYU fares
on the NYT list, this will add to the discussion immensely.

The last NYT computer rating I saw had BYU floating between 15 and
20. This was due to their weak schedule.

Someone wanted to know the New York Times' computer rankings of college
teams. Here it is from today's (12/5) paper, based on games through 12/1:

1) Florida
2) Boston College
3) S.M.U.
4) Oklahoma
5) Oklahoma State
6) South Carolina
7) Nebraska
8) Washington
9) Ohio State
10) Maryland
11) Florida State
12) L.S.U.
13) Miami (Fla)
14) Auburn
15) Tenessee
16) Arkansas
17) Virginia
18) Clemson
19) Rutgers (!)
20) BRIGHAM YOUNG

Wayne Citrin saw fit to put an exclamation (surprise) on the NYT's
ranking of Rutgers at 19. It really is not a much of a surprise at
all, considering:

		(1) Rutgers went 7-3,
		(2) Rutgers had a tough schedule, and
		(3) Rutgers beat two bowl bound teams (West
			Virginia and Army).
