The person who asked about the free kick is absolutely correct. Just like someone can punt from anywhere on the field or even try a drop kick, so can one fair catch and call for a free kick. The defense must line up ten yards behind the line of scrimmage, so it is possible that they could block the attempt. The effect of all of this is to effectively allow a kick seven yards closer to the goal line. Imagine, time running out, Miami has to punt with the game tied and time running out. Nelms fair catches.
