I`m not positive, but I think you do get a free kick after a fair catch. You could either use a tee or use the ancient art of drop-kicking. Boy, I`d love to see somebody do that. Tom O`Connor ihuxw!tommyo

I recall this exact thing happening in an Oakland (remember them?) Raiders game about 10-12 years ago. George Blanda kicked a 52 (?) yard field goal after a fair catch. I would like to think it won the game, but something deep in my memory tells me it just gave them the lead at halftime. Can someone else confirm this? Free kicks after a fair catch are few and far between. ...bob garmise...at&t bell labs, columbus...

It happened this year; I saw it on TV. With only a few seconds left in the first half, one team (sorry, don't remember the teams) scores and kicks off. They try a squib kick; the ball is a short looping kick and one of the up men calls for a fair catch (on a kickoff!) at his own 45. They elect to go for a free kick attempt at a field goal. Everyone was confused. Everyone starts to line up at the line of scrimmage for a conventional field goal. They finally get straightened out. The defensive team must line up ten yards downfield. The kicker kicks from the line of scrimmage, but he is not allowed a tee. He may (and did) use a holder (beats drop-kicking!). He missed the attempt at what would have been a 65-yard field goal. -- --Bruce Nemnich, Thinking Machines Corporation, Cambridge, MA ihnp4!godot!bruce, bjn@mit-mc.arpa ... soon to be bruce@godot.arpa
