[net.sport.football] Who's Number 1?

sgm@rayssd.UUCP (12/24/84)

The question of which college football team is the number one team
can never be resolved until there is a playoff.

What I'd like to see is a playoff involving four teams -- the winners
of the big three bowl games (Cotton, Sugar, and Orange) plus one
at-large entry, to be determined by a "committee of knowledgeable
football coaches, writers, etc".
No flames about not including the winner of the grand-daddy of the
bowl games. The Rose Bowl does not extend invitations, but instead
grants spots to the winners of the Pac-8 and Big-10 conferences.
No other teams may compete in the Rose Bowl. (Too bad, 'cause
Brown University would have put on quite a show! :-) )
If the winner of the Rose Bowl deserves a shot at the number one ranking,
that team can be at at-large entry.

The four teams could be paired any way. If you're number one, you should
be able to beat anyone. The tournament could be finished up in two weekends.

But then we'd need something else to argue about.
