The question of which college football team is the number one team can never be resolved until there is a playoff. What I'd like to see is a playoff involving four teams -- the winners of the big three bowl games (Cotton, Sugar, and Orange) plus one at-large entry, to be determined by a "committee of knowledgeable football coaches, writers, etc". No flames about not including the winner of the grand-daddy of the bowl games. The Rose Bowl does not extend invitations, but instead grants spots to the winners of the Pac-8 and Big-10 conferences. No other teams may compete in the Rose Bowl. (Too bad, 'cause Brown University would have put on quite a show! :-) ) If the winner of the Rose Bowl deserves a shot at the number one ranking, that team can be at at-large entry. The four teams could be paired any way. If you're number one, you should be able to beat anyone. The tournament could be finished up in two weekends.
