[net.sport.football] New play on 4th downs

djvh@drutx.UUCP (VanHandelDJ) (12/22/84)

Your idea of a line drive punt on 4th down inside the 50yd line seems
like a good idea. Many punters continually kick the ball into the end
zone for a touchback in this situation. Your idea might create some
turnovers, and there is a good chance of the punt squibbing inside the 20
and being downed there.

A turnover, as your BONUS question asked, would stop the clock
because of change of possession. As soon as a punt or FG attempt crosses
the line of scrimmage (even if blocked) it is a change of possession.

	Here is another one:

With time running out, would it work for an offensive player to
spike the ball if he cannot get out of bounds. This would stop the clock
momentarily, enabling the players to line up, and delay of game is only
a 5 yard penalty. This is a strange idea, is there any reason it couldn't
be applied?

[..counting not to 2 neither to 4, but to 3. the number of the count shall
be 3 and 3 is to be the number thee shalt count...]

Wouldn't that just be a fumble?? I seem to remember a game one time
(seems like the Cowboys and somebody) where some guy was running untouched
into the end-zone but spiked the ball on the 2! I think it rolled out the
back of the end-zone and was ruled a touchback. Anybody remember
this? Sounds like a Cowboy play to me :-) (yes, I'm a cowboy fan).

Now, if he spiked it in such a way that it bounced out of bounds (very
dangerous) or simply throw it (backwards so as not to have an illegal
forward pass) out. That would probably get you a penalty.

I'm tellin' you guys, I've been saying it all year, Miami vs. SF.
However, I've changed my tune about the winner. SF now. Dallas
gave Maimi a better game than I expected.

If the runner spikes the ball after being tackled it is not
a fumble; it is a delay of the game and the runner could
be penalized (stopping the clock and walking off 5-yards).
So..... it might be a way to get the clock stopped at the
cost of the 5 yards.
