[net.sport.football] the Orange Bowl

stevev@tekchips.UUCP (Steve Vegdahl) (01/02/85)

I immensely enjoyed last night's 1985 Orange Bowl, for two reasons.

1. I had gotten sick of reading all the stuff on the net.sport.football
about how wonderful OU's football team is.

2. Don James, the Husky coach, has been a long time opponent a playoff
system to determine who's #1. His victory over OU puts him in the
position of either having him to change his mind, or accept the
fact that he's not #1 (assuming that the polls tonight confirm that
BYU maintains their #1 ranking). As someone who favors a post-season
tourney, I hope he reconsiders his position about whether a playoff
    is a good idea.

It's not likely that James would ever reconsider his viewpoint, as
we all witnessed at the end of the game. I'm sure that every one here
in Seattle felt very disappointed that the Huskies didn't go into a
two minute offense at the end. After all, it was the only chance that
the Huskies had at the #1 ranking. The margin of victory was slightly
inflated by the interception that led to the last score. Even with as
well as the Huskies played over Oklahoma, it still wasn't decisive
enough. The polls just aren't decided on the basis of good sportsmanship
and not running up the score.

Agreed. Don James showed a lot of class in his decision not to run up the
score. He and his team are to be commended on a job well done.
