As many of you have probably heard, the University of Georgia has been placed on probation for the second time in three years. Each time it seems that they were found guilty of minor infractions. The latest charge was not necessarily the fault of anyone directly associated with the team, rather it was an overzealous booster. At least that has been the most publicized infraction. It seems that a Bulldog backer arranged a car loan for a player, and when the player could no longer make the payments, the backer payed off the loan. The player later transferred to arch-rival Georgia Tech, a school known for its high academic standards and with an improving football program. The player claimed to transfer because the academic program that he had been placed in at Georgia was a joke, an insult to his intelligence. In a newspaper article that I read recently the player had been placed in a remedial academic program at Georgia because his SAT score was in the 500 neighborhood. It was also stated in the article that the player had been failing some of the remedial courses he was taking at Georgia. Further along in the article it led one to believe that the player has been having more success athletically as well as academically at Tech. One of Tech's assistant coaches was quoted as saying that he feels that the player will be a starter for Tech and "will eventually make the dean's list." It would seem that the player has made a remarkable advance in his academics, bordering on miraculous, perhaps magical, perhaps falsified..... -- Roger Pannell ARPA: pannell%dosadi.DEC@DECWRL.ARPA, pannell%dosadi.DEC@Purdue-Merlin.ARPA UUCP: {allegra, decvax, ucbvax}!decwrl!rhea!dosadi!pannell
