I had a great time in Portland!!!! The Dead fooled us by doing the April Fool's show on 3/31. 4/1 was *real* standard! Great shows nonetheless (as usual)! Here goes: 3/31 MUSIC NEVER STOPPED! -> Candyman CC Rider -> LOSER Beat It On Down The Line Dupree's Diamond Blues It's All Over Now -> Don't Ease Me In -- Iko, Iko -> Samson and Delilah He's Gone -> I Need A Miracle -> China Doll -> jam (Jerry and Brent alternating solos with drum accompaniment) -> The Wheel -> Playing in the Band -> Playing in the Band **This is not a misprint!!*** -> DAY TRIPPER U.S. Blues Music Never stopped was possibly the hottest I ever heard. During the space jam at the end, Jerry kept building it up then bringing it down, only to bring it back up again. Loser was reminiscent of the fall '78 versions. The after China Doll, the band jammed for a while, then all left except for the drummers and Jerry, who stayed on for a while, blending in beautifully. He then left, as Brent came on to do a real jazzy jam, with Jerry coming back to join him near the end. They finally both left, and the drummers proceeded to do the most lifeless, boring drum solo I've ever heard them do. No matter. The band came on and went directly into The Wheel, dispensing with the traditional post-drums space jam. After the Wheel, however, they went into a jam that led into the reprise of Playing in the Band, finishing the version they started four nights ago at Nassau. However, after the reprise, they went back to the beginning, and did a full version of "Playin'"!!! April Fools!!! This went into Day Tripper, which seemed to be all anybody could remember the next day! 4/1 Bertha-> Greatest Story Ever Told West L.A. Fadeaway -> Little Red Rooster -> Bird Song Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (Phil Singing solo) Looks Like Rain -> Might As Well -- China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider -> Estimated Prophet -> Eyes of the World -> drums -> space -> The Other One -> Stella Blue -> Round & Round -> Not Fade Away It's All Over Now, Baby Blue How Predictable. April Fools again! Oh, well, on to Providence! __ "We used to play for silver, now we play for life..." Seth Jackson
