[net.sport.football] Playboy Ranking Jinx

bbaker@cadsys.UUCP (William Baker) (08/14/85)

I see that Playboy has picked the Seahawks to win the Super
Bowl this year. As a Seahawk fan, I am saddened. The addled
nitwit who makes Playboy's picks each year has been so far wrong
the past few years that any prudent bettor would carefully bet the
reverse of the Playboy picks. I don't bet and I don't read Playboy
but I have noticed that they have been very far off the mark in the
past. Is this the beginning of a new jinx, like the Heisman jinx?

1.	The nitwit mentioned above (Anson Mount) has an affiliation with the
Pacific NorthWest and appears to bias opinions because of this. For proof
look at his predictions over the past 5 years on how well OSU (Go Beavs :-))
would do. (~6 wins versus predictions of ~26). It should not surprise
anyone that the first time the Seahawks have a slim chance at winning the
Super Bowl Anson Mount would choose them.

2.	As a 49er fanatic (No, I am not a bandwagon jumper. I have suffered
with the Niners 18 of my 23 years) I am enjoying what future historians will
consider the Niner Dynasty. Nobody will even come close this year as the
Niners will be 19-0. I am still convinced that the Niners would have gone
undefeated last year if the stupid Seahawk game had not taken priority over the
Niner-Steeler contest in the Portland area. One of the two Niner games the
networks missed here. The 49ers simply cannot play their best if I don't
get to see the game (-:

3.	Did anybody else think it peculiar that the networks completely
skipped the opening of NFL pre-season last weekend. Or did the swine at the
Portland stations simply not broadcast them here. What gives?!?

4.	Predictions:
		San Fransisco 49ers
		St. Louis Cardinals
Green Bay Packers (Is the Pack Back?) (The Bears are sissies)

Oakland (I can't say LA) Raiders
		New England Patriots
		Pittsburg Steelers

	Super Bowl:
		San Fransisco	44
Seattle 17 (My dad likes the Seahawks)
(They do better as a wild card)

	College:
#1 Anybody but BYU please. Florida State otherwise.
Oregon State Beavers 4-0 then 6-5 (Don't laugh, it hurts)
PAC-10: University of Washington (I hate them Dawgs)

I don't know what you're talking about; Playboy's Anson Mount was one of
the very few sportswriters who correctly picked San Francisco and Miami
as meeting in the last Super Bowl. He also correctly picked the 'Niners
to be champions. With this kind of track record I think his pick for
this season's finalists (Chicago and Seattle) should be taken quite
seriously.

DYNASTY?!?!? From a team that lost even a pre-season game to the
(giggle, choke, gasp!) Denver Donkeys?
