[net.sport.football] NFL Picks

pannell@dosadi.DEC (Roger D. Pannell 229-6893 LTN1-1/D03) (08/30/84)

These are my picks for the upcoming NFL season. Each CENTRAL division
could belong to anybody, so I picked a couple of dark horses. Atlanta has
made the playoffs every even numbered year starting in 1978. New England
may just prove to be the CLASS of the AFC this year.

				NFC

EAST CENTRAL WEST
---- ------- ----

Washington 12-4 Detroit 9-7 L. A. 10-6
Dallas 11-5 Atlanta 10-6

Playoffs: Dallas over Atlanta
	   Washington over Detroit
	   Dallas over L. A.

---- ------- ----

New England 11-5 Houston 9-7 L. A. 11-5
Miami 10-6 San Diego 9-7

Playoffs: Miami over San Diego
	  New England over Houston

With the NFL football season fast approaching, everyone is starting
to mouth off about why THEIR team will win the Super Bowl. Well, here is a
chance to put your money where your mouth is. I am willing to keep a record
of people's predictions as to which team's will:

	1) Win each Division
	2) Win the Wild Card spots in each Conference
	3) Win the Conference Championships
	4) Win the Super Bowl

I will take submissions up until midnight September 6 and post the
results on September 7. Then, when Super Bowl times comes around in January
we will see who was right and who was wrong.
Please, if you are going to submit a prediction, do so for each
catagory. I will not accept letters with just one or two predictions such
as "San Francisco will beat Los Angeles in the Super Bowl".
You may e-mail me you responses or post them on the net and I will
keep an account of everyone's picks.
You could also just not bother and give the Redskins the Lombardi
trophy right now. They are going to win the Super Bowl anyway.

Dave, you only listed one wild card from each Conference, but as you
know there are two wild card positions in each conference. Just an over sight
on your part I'm sure. Find your other two wild cards and post them so I can
put your picks into my filing system. Thanks.

My NFL picks:

NFC East: Redskins if Riggins fails then Rogers rolls
NFC Central: Chicago Bears	love that D, but weak division helps
NFC West: San Francisco of course

AFC East: Miami Dolphins Marino won't be as awesome but Shula will
AFC Central: Pittsburgh who else could win this division?
Steelers (as in, who else has the talent?)
AFC West: Seattle my team, I'm baised, but Easley is great and
				Warner is back

NFC Wildcards: St. Louis and NY Giants

AFC Wildcards: Raiders (who cares how) and New England
(it is close between Raiders, Denver, and KC; NE is in
		 because of easier division schedule)

NFC Champion: 49er's (did I see someone pick the Giants?!?)

AFC Champion: Seahawks (ok, ok, so it's a dream)

Superbowl Champion: Seahawks (why stop now)

For what it's worth, here are my predictions for the 1985 NFL season.
Take it with a grain of salt. You must remember that last year I posted
more than one article claiming that the Raiders would easily beat the
Seahawks in the AFC wildcard game. Oh well, at least I got the
Superbowl right.

NFC EAST: Redskins
NFC CENTRAL: Bears
NFC WEST: 49'ers
NFC WILDCARDS: Cowboys
               Packers

AFC EAST: Dolphins
AFC CENTRAL: Pittsburg
AFC WEST: Raiders
AFC WILDCARDS: Seahawks
               Broncos

NFC Champion: 49'ers
AFC Champion: Raiders (Assuming someone else knocks off the Seahawks.
                        If not, who knows?)

SUPERBOWL: 49'ers (This is tough because I really like the Raiders.
                       But we must face facts.)

				A.F.C.

East: Miami * Weak division. I'm not as awed by them as some
	       * people. Take away Marino and what do you
	       * got?

Central: Pittsburgh * Nothing that great in this division.

West: Seattle * Only strong division in the AFC. This team
	         * is good has a good coach and just might be
		 * hungry enough to do it.

Wildcard: L.A. Raiders * Still have some talent, but I've always hated them.
Wildcard: Denver Broncos * Are they for real? Only time will tell.

A.F.C. Champ: Seattle over L.A.

* Like I said, AFC West-The division where all the AFC strenght is.

				N.F.C.

East: Washington * If New York and St. Louis have good years (you never know
		    * which way the balls going to bounce) they'll give them
		    * a run for it. I'll enjoy watching the demise of the
		    * cowboys, I like them almost as much as I like the raiders.

Central: Chicago * Being a packer backer this isn't easy for me to admit.
		    * They'll be tough to beat if thier defense stays healthy
		    * along with McMahon, Payton and Co.

West: San Fran. * With all that talent they should have no problem in
		    * division if they stay healthy.

Wildcard: Packers * The pack will do ok this year. The defense is much
	            * improved and the passing game should still be as
		    * exciting as ever.
Wildcard: Giants * Just a guess, could go to either St. Louis or the
		    * Rams if Dickerson is around to help.

NFC Champ: San Fran

Super Bowl: San Francisco over Seattle.

I'm not a 49er fan. But I believe when they're healty and playing
well they're best in NFL. i.e. They can beat anyone when the money's on
the line.

tml@drupa.UUCP (Tim Larison) (09/01/85)

My NFL picks:

NFC East: NY Giants Best D in the division
NFC Central: Chicago Bears Won last year and now have McMahon at qb
NFC West: San Francisco Who else?

AFC East: Miami Dolphins New England may have as much talent, but
                              they don't have Don Shula
AFC Central: Pittsburgh Strong finish last year a sign of things
             Steelers to come
AFC West: Denver Broncos Will show last year not a fluke; best
defense and now have breakaway threats
in Steve Sewall at rb and V. Johnson at wr.

NFC Wildcards: Washington & Green Bay

AFC Wildcards: Seattle & New England (Raiders need a QB)

NFC Champion: NY Giants

AFC Champion: Denver Broncos

Superbowl Champion: Denver Broncos (perhaps my home town bias is showing)

I think your simulation needs lots more work! I could MAYBE

bottom? I also would be very surprised to see San Diego finish second
must less first in this division (Sorry Charger fans, I like the team,

First of all John, Pittsburg is not in the *set* of teams Dolphins, Raiders,
Seahawks and Broncos. Steelers would be though.

Secondly, *you* spelled PITTSBURGH incorrectly !!!! Four time *super-bowl*

I dont know!!!!!!!

I agree with the first posting, maybe cause I live in San Diego :-:-
but Spanos, the new Chargers own, is cleaning house. He traded Jackson
the AFC leading rusher last year, Duckworth a speed burner, signed Tim
Spencer RB, maybe Gary Anderson will be here in a few days, Trumaine
Johnson is here.

I believe if the offense protects Fouts They are on their way. Don't
laugh to much but watch their defense. It's all new and GOOD.

Sorry Rich. I didn't mean to offend. I'm just a victim of California
public schools. At least I picked the Steelers to win the division.
doesn't that count for anything?

By the way, you don't have to tell me about how good the Steeler
teams of the 70's were. I'm a Raiders fan (You remember them. The
team that the Steelers always used to beat in the playoffs.).

Well, here are my picks.

			NFC
West Central East
San Francisco Chicago Washington
Los Angeles St. Louis

			AFC
West Central East
Seattle Cincinnati Miami
Kansas City New England

Playoffs:	NFC AFC
Cardinals over Rams	New England over Kansas City
49ers over Cardinals	Seattle over Patriots
Redskins over Bears	Miami over Bengals
49ers over Redskins	Miami over Seattle

Super Bowl:	49ers over Miami (again)

Notes:
49ers are by far and away the class of the NFL but a lot of things can
happen on the way to the Super Bowl like injuries and Overconfidence.
In the AFC west there are too many good teams for 3 of them to make the
playoffs as they will knock each other off. Seattle is a typical Chuck Knox
team in that it is a good regular season team but not a good playoff team.
Marino will not be as awesome this year but he should be good enough.

Additional note - These picks are biased by an extreme love for the
patriots.

Why NOT predict them to make the playoffs? Given that they reside in the
NFC Central, and the fact that they ARE for real, and that the Bud-man is
back, and they're schedule (pretty weak, since they were 3-13 last year),
they have an excellant chance of winning first place.
