As promised, I have created a new form of 'Rotisserie' game. For those of
you unfamiliar with Rotisserie Baseball, it is a game in which participants
draft players to make up a team. Players are assessed points according to
their performance in various statistical categories. Since baseball season is
almost over, I have created a game based on 'rotisserie baseball' that I call
Dugwal Football. I have devised formulae by which various players can be
assessed points. These formulae are used on a group of players drafted by
'owners' and points are allotted. The owner with the most points at the end of
the season is the winner!
I am submitting this game up to the readers of net.games.pbm and
net.sport.football in order to add spice to both newsgroups. Any number of
owners can participate. Trades are allowed according to a special
player-movement rule. Likewise, releasing players and signing free-agents
is also allowed. I feel that this is the area of the game that has the most
potential. The following is a synopsis of the rules as I thought them up
over the last two weeks. Permission to duplicate them is given as long as
proper credit is given and the rules are duplicated in full.
===================================cut here====================================
Rules for Dugwal Football
1) Permission to duplicate these rules is given as long as they are duplicated
in full so that this message is included. This game was designed by Carlo
Sgro (...!watmath!watrose!cjsgro or ...!ihnp4!chinet!dagwood) on September
12, 1985 for the enjoyment of readers of net.games.pbm and
net.sport.football. These rules cannot be used for commercial profit
without expressed written consent of the author, Carlo Sgro.
2) There can be an unlimited number of game players (known as 'owners').
3) Owners draft a team of 7 players consisting of 2 quarterbacks, 2
runningbacks, 2 pass receivers, and 1 placekicker. The draft will be held
after each owner submits a list of at least 30 players to the moderator,
A random order will be selected for the draft and the draft will be held.
The order will be reversed each round until no more players can be selected.
The draft list will be of the following format:
1 marino, dan, miami, qb
2 montana, joe, sf, qb
3 allen, marcus, raiders, rb
4 clayton, mark, mia, rcv
5 dickerson, eric, rams, rb
6 anderson, gary, pit, pk
7 fouts, dan, sd, qb
etc.
Drafting rookies and players who are in other leagues, retired, etc. is
legal but points will be calculated on actual NFL statistics.
Players who have more than one skill (e.g. Quarterbacks who run a lot or
Runningbacks who catch a lot of passes) can be used at any desired
position but you can only have a maximum of seven POSITIONS filled. As
an example, a team could consist of Marino at QB, White at QB and RB,
Wilder at RB and Rcvr, Duper at Rcvr, and Franklin at PK. In this
situation, you can decide to not have someone do double duty if you
find someone better.
4) An owner's total point value will be determined by the following formula:
total_points = .27 * qb1 + .06 * qb2 + .23 * rb1 + .09 * rb2 + .13 * rcv1 +
.09 * rcv2 + .13 * pk
where qb1 is the quarterback with the highest point value, etc. Thus,
your top runningback contributes 23% of your total point value while your
backup receiver only contributes 9%.
4) The formulae for calculating the points for each player are as follows:
qb: (td - 0.3 * int.) * (pct. completed / 50) * (yds. / 100)
rb: (5 * carries + yards + 100 * td) / 5
rcv: (receptions * 20 + yds. + 100 * td) / 5
pk: ( (good fg - (bad fg * .5)) * 3 + good xp - (missed fg * 5)) ) * 5
The average value for an average player will be around 380 at the end of the
season.
Examples:
Dan Fouts: 19 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, 62.5% completion rate, passed
for 3740 yds. => (19 - 0.3 * 17)* 62.5 / 50 * 3740 / 100 = 650
Dan Marino: 48, 17, 64.2, 5084 => (48 - .3 * 17) * 64.2 / 50 * 5084 / 100
= 2800
Joe Ferguson: 12, 17, 55.5, 1991 => 152
Marcus Allen: 275 carries, 1168 yards, 13 tds => (5*275 + 1168 + 13*100) /5
= 769
Mike Pruitt: 163, 506, 6 => (5*163 + 506 + 6 * 100) /5 = 384
Mark Duper: 71 receptions, 1306 yds., 8 tds => 705
Cliff Branch: 27, 401, 0 => 188
Tony Franklin: 22 good fg, 6 missed fg, 42 good xp, 0 missed fg =>
((22 - 0.5*6) * 3 + 42 - 5*0) * 5 = 495
Uwe von Schamann: 9 good fg, 10 missed fg, 66 good xp, 4 missed xp =>
((9 - 0.5*10) * 3 + 66 - 5*4) * 5 = 290
5) These formulae have been formulated based on what statistics are available
in The Sporting News weekly and the author's personal preference. No
flames please! However, if you feel you have a better formulation, please
pass it along.
6) Each owner can make one player movement each week. A player movement is
defined as a trade of one or more players with another owner or a signing of
a free agent. Three or Four, etc. way trades are not allowed. With each
player movement that results in an imbalance of the 2-2-2-1 position split
such that there are too many players in a position, player releases must be
specified. A player release is not considered a player movement. Player
movements not expended in a week can be saved, up to a limit of 3. All
above that limit are lost. A free agent is defined as a player who is not
owned by an owner at the present time. 'The present time' is defined as the
earliest time on the mail header to the moderator announcing the signing.

Draft lists are not needed at this time, either, although the sooner we can get
the draft over with, the sooner the fun can begin! Also, I am willing to
moderate but I would prefer if we could get some volunteers to moderate since:
a) I don't have much time or disk space.
b) The Sporting News is slow to reach Canada.
c) I'd like to play!
So, what'cha say?!?

I will moderate a pbm rotisserie football game for all interested players. I will use Carlos' rules. If you want to play, send me your draft list. I will hold a draft on Wednesday. In the meantime I will work out rule details with Carlos. -- Chuck Simmons chuck@darvax.UUCP ihnp4!dartvax!chuck
